Towards the end of the first year of the TRR a workshop covering basic R usage was held. Participants from LMU, TUM, EKUT and MPI Golm were introduced in to the basic approaches to data import, analysis and visualisation using R in an RStudio Server environment. The workshop was organised by Niklas Schandry with support from Kevin Murray (MPI Tübingen) and compute infrastructure was provided by I01 / Stephan Hachinger.
The main focus of this workshop was conveying basic concepts of the R language and introduction to commonly used approaches for reading, formatting, visualisation and statistical analysis of different datasets within the tidyverse ecosystem. Over the course of four half-day sessions the participants received a brief introduction into relevant programming backgrounds. Subsequently the focus of the workshop shifted towards working with real-world datasets and overcoming common challenges during data import and formatting to prepare datasets for analysis. A particular focus was placed on approaches for exploratory analysis and creation of appealing plots and common statistical analysis. Finally, some more advanced workflows for dealing with large datasets were introduced.
